派特森的10歲兒子索倫（Soren）在萬聖節前壹天，未經母親允許，獨自走了不到壹英裡（約1.6公裡）的路回家。警方在邊境附近發現了索倫，並通知派特森他的地點。當時，派特森因陪伴另壹名孩子看病，無法及時趕到。警方隨後將索倫送回家，但幾個小時後，返回將派特森逮捕。
